ORACULAR SPECTACULAR 2023

Our creative relationship with MGMT began in 2018. When they approached us about an upcoming performance of their iconic album Oracular Spectacular, we were immediately excited to explore the possibilities. This wasn’t simply a recreation of the album; it was a complete reimagining, staged through the surreal and nostalgic lens of a high school play.

All of Us was proud to lead the show direction, production design, lighting design and lighting programming for this eccentric and ambitious project. The performance was layered with constant motion and transformation: modular video elements, a stage that assembled and disassembled in real time, dancers, a children’s choir, rotating festival turntables, and a steady flow of props entering and exiting the space. Orchestrating this level of complexity required a thoughtful, highly detailed approach; one that allowed each element to coexist, interact, and ultimately feel cohesive.

Versatility and modularity were central to the production design. At its core was a mobile, semi-transparent video wall split into two independent sections. These panels could travel laterally, revealing a cube truss structure behind them that functioned as both a B-stage and a riser; supporting guest musicians performing on top of, within, and around the structure.

Collaborating with MGMT is always a pleasure. This project was a massive undertaking, which made the final result all the more rewarding. The show was a tremendous success, and we’re excited to see where their creative journey leads next.
